Kids have it tough is a refrain from practically every nook and corner these days. What we fail to address is this a cycle of life and when we were young we had it rough too – in a varying degree. Having said this, however, I acknowledge that the homework that they bring back to deal with on a day-to-day basis is heart wrenching. When I look at the little ones with their heavy school bags all set to wrestle their daily grind I long to help them out of their misery. So I try it out with the kid at home, but before I do she brings out the big ones with the ‘don’t help me I need to get this done on my own’ expression.
Even if I could….!?!
The little one gets really bothered if I so much as tiptoe into her room enquiring about her homework. I try to go the mile with a ‘why don’t you take a break?’ request. But she won’t have it – the need to get the matter over and done with is the norm. Also, the competitive streak is apparent. With a sigh of dejection I go my way leaving her to fend for herself. Acknowledging this she comes over and requests some assistance in math (my pet peeve). I try to analyze the problem from every possible angle and when I look at her in confusion I see… humor. Gotcha - her eyes infer… giggles and lets me off the hook. Cute or naughty?
Hmmmmmmmmmmm....
So a great debate is on the way at the dinner table - about the dos and don’ts during exam time. Stay away from the constant godmothering is what is skirted upon but ‘realizing’ (ahem!) that I have her best interests at heart she comes over and gifts me …. a chocolate! Is that sweet or ‘don’t mess with me’ play?
Well…
She goes her not so merry way to get the work done and I do my gig as well. Win:win?
